BEE HOTELS: BE AN ECO-WARRIOR

You care for the environment? Then, a bee hotel is the right fit for you! Bee hotels provide shelter for solitary bees for nesting and hibernating. The non-aggressive solitary bees help to pollinate flowers, fruits, and vegetables in your garden. There are many different species of solitary bees, for example leafcutter or mason bees. Unlike honeybees, they are not socially organized and do not live in hives. Instead, they search for an individual space for nesting. For that they prefer “tunnels” in which they place their eggs - each egg separately in a different cell. After providing food (nectar and pollen) for each egg, they seal up the cells using mud or leaf litter to protect their offspring against predators. Solitary bees will often nest in the same area year after year.

The surrounding of your bee hotel is very important. Place your bee hotel close to flowers, 3 to 5 ft high, orientated from south-west to south-east, away from high winds.

Bee balm, black eyed susan, coneflower, clover, lavender, lemon balm, mint and yarrow are only some examples of flowers & herbs that attract bees.

All bee hotels are filled with local wood and bamboo, or with upcycled materials that have not been treated in any way. The bee hotel boxes are made with long-lasting, weather-resistant red or aromatic cedar. While the interior of the bee hotels is untreated, the exterior is finished with a mixture of mineral oil and beeswax. Hangers are provided on the back. . All bee hotels are made as one of a kind. Measurements: vary (the "regular" height is between 10"-16", but can be 8"-36", depth varies between 4.5" and 6 ").

20210330_152414(1).jpg

There is actually more to it than "just build a birdhouse". Birds need special conditions to feel comfortable. Size, materials and location are essential. To provide best conditions for the birds, ZanaWoodArtZ follows specific guidelines to create her birdhouses.

All birdhouses are made with weather-resistant red/aromatic cedar and each birdhouse has vents for a better air flow.  The birdhouses have pre-drilled holes or hangers on the back for easy hanging and one side opens for easy clean-out. The exterior is finished with a homemade mixture of mineral oil & local beeswax.

Measurements: max.  10" x 5" x 5" in or 10" x 4" x 4" in (interior)

The inside is untreated. The size of the birdhouse makes it suitable for bluebirds, chickadees, wrens, downy woodpeckers, and nuthatches.

All birdhouses are made as one of a kind.
